Paul Gibson

Paul works in the area of business, contract and commercial law, with specialised knowledge of Marlborough's viticultural industry and expertise in private and community trusts.

Paul completed a law degree (LLB) at Victoria University in 1991, complementing a commerce degree (BCA (Economics)).  Admitted to the Bar in 1992, he became a partner at Gascoigne Wicks in 1997.  Paul has completed a masters degree (LLM, Queen Mary, University of London) specialising in commercial and corporate law.

His principal areas of practice include:

  • Viticulture and wine industries:  land acquisition and development, irrigation water supply and storage, vineyard leases and management, grape supply contracts, juice and wine processing agreements, wine sales and distribution
  • Business structures:  companies, joint ventures, partnerships and trusts; establishment, operation and exit 
  • Business disputes: shareholder and contract disputes
  • General company law and business advice
  • Land dealings and financing: sales and purchases, subdivision and development, easements and leases, mortgages and refinancing
  • Private and community trusts.   

Paul has built an extended network of good relationships within the Marlborough community through his work with many companies and various trusts.  He currently acts for the Marlborough Electric Power Trust, and was involved in the establishment of the Marlborough Health Trust, Marlborough Economic Development Trust, Marlborough Stadium Trust, Destination Marlborough Trust and the Wairau Accident & Emergency Trust.

Before turning to law, Paul completed a joinery apprenticeship and established a successful business making solid timber furniture.  He was the recipient of the Bestwood Award in 1979 and a NZ Craftsman Training Foundation Award in 1980.
